Game Preview
The Baltimore Orioles aim to build momentum as they kick off a four-game series with a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
Baltimore will have a fresh face in the lineup, with right-hander Zach Eflin making his Orioles debut following a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. Eflin (5-7, 4.09 ERA) is scheduled to start the first game of the doubleheader.
Eflin’s last outing for the Rays was against Toronto on Wednesday, where he earned a no-decision after allowing two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered off Eflin in that game.
The Orioles, who are 4-5 since the All-Star break, are looking to gain traction after Sunday’s 8-6 win over the San Diego Padres, which prevented a series sweep.
“That was a big win for us,” said Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. “Hopefully we keep it rolling next series, stay positive, and just keep grinding it out.”
Sunday’s game saw a six-run third inning that offered a glimmer of hope for Baltimore’s offense.
“It was good to see our guys have a pass-the-baton approach that inning,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, who recently shuffled the lineup by moving Colton Cowser to leadoff and Gunnar Henderson to the three-hole.
Toronto finished a nine-game homestand with a 7-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday, completing a three-game series sweep. The Blue Jays are 5-4 since the All-Star break and are striving to turn their season around.
“We know we still have to come to the ballpark, do our thing, play the game the right way, and try to win the ballgame,” said Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios.
The teams have split their six meetings this year, and the doubleheader is a makeup for a rainout on May 14. They will face off three more times next week in Toronto.
