Game Preview

The Seattle Mariners’ pitching staff is showing it’s at the top of its game.

After securing back-to-back shutouts against the New York Mets, the Mariners are set to host a Sunday night game on ESPN for the first time since 2004 as they aim for a sweep of their three-game series.

Ace Luis Castillo (9-11, 3.48 ERA) will look to help Seattle achieve another shutout when he faces off against the Mets’ Luis Severino (7-5, 4.06).

"Great hitters on our team have really stepped up the past couple of nights," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza noted. His team is now trailing Atlanta by half a game in the race for the National League’s third wild-card spot. "We need to be prepared for another strong arm on Sunday."

The Mariners’ Bryce Miller threw six scoreless innings in a 6-0 win on Friday, and All-Star Logan Gilbert pitched seven shutout innings in a 4-0 victory on Saturday.

"Our starting pitching has been exceptional all season," Mariners manager Scott Servais remarked. "It’s truly impressive."

Leading the majors with 72 quality starts and 13 shutouts, the Mariners are also tied with Houston for the top spot in the American League West.

In Saturday’s game, Seattle scored three runs in the first inning off Sean Manaea, with Victor Robles, Randy Arozarena, and Justin Turner all contributing doubles, and Mitch Haniger adding a two-out, RBI single.

The Mariners’ lineup has been bolstered by mid-season acquisitions, including Robles, Arozarena, and Turner, all of whom have made significant contributions since joining the team.

Severino, who has a 3.44 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners, is coming off two losses, including a 6-3 defeat at Colorado on Tuesday where he allowed five runs.

Castillo, who has a 4.44 ERA in four career starts against the Mets, is looking to bounce back from a 4-2 loss to Detroit despite delivering his sixth straight quality start.
