Game Preview

The Boston Red Sox aim to achieve their first sweep in over a month as they finish a three-game series against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

Following a 9-4 victory on Tuesday, the Red Sox are on the brink of their first series sweep since July 2-4 against the Miami Marlins. Their recent wins came after a four-game losing streak, including a three-game sweep by the Houston Astros last weekend.

Key to Boston’s success on Tuesday was Kutter Crawford, who pitched 5 1/3 perfect innings. Red Sox manager Alex Cora used his bullpen strategically to manage the Rangers’ four-run sixth inning.

"We’re going to use everybody and find a way to get 27 outs to win games," Cora said. "In this playoff chase, it’s all about seizing the moment."

Rob Refsnyder also played a pivotal role, contributing three hits and driving in two runs after hitting a walk-off single in the series opener. Refsnyder has reached base in 43 of 49 starts this season and is a crucial leader for the young offense alongside Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran.

Duran, who has served a two-game suspension for a recent incident, will be eligible to return on Wednesday.

The Red Sox will turn to Tanner Houck (8-8, 3.02 ERA) to secure the sweep. Despite a solid six-inning performance against Houston on Friday, Houck is winless in his last four starts. His previous outing against Texas this season was a tough one, allowing eight hits and six runs in a 7-4 loss on August 3.

In his career against the Rangers, Houck is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA over three matchups.

The Rangers, struggling after their World Series win last year, are now 10 games below .500. On Tuesday, they were held hitless for five innings by Crawford and managed all their runs in a single inning. Leody Taveras stood out with a 2-for-4 performance.

"It’s frustrating," said rookie Wyatt Langford. "We’re having trouble figuring things out offensively."

Texas shuffled their lineup but saw little improvement, with the top four hitters combining for a 2-for-14 performance. The Rangers have yet to announce their starting pitcher for Wednesday.
