Game Preview
The Atlanta Braves will begin a critical three-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday without starting third baseman Austin Riley. An MRI on Monday revealed that Riley has a fractured right hand after being hit by a pitch in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. He is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks.
“It’s unfortunate when you get hurt in such a way,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said.
Riley, who is batting .256 with 19 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 63 runs scored, leaves a significant gap in Atlanta’s infield defense as they continue to deal with injuries. The Braves have already lost 2023 MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. (knee) and Cy Young contender Spencer Strider (elbow) for the season. Second baseman Ozzie Albies (wrist) is also out until September, along with setup man A.J. Minter (hip).
After missing 52 days due to a hamstring strain, center fielder Michael Harris II has returned. Right fielder Jorge Soler, who was acquired at the trade deadline, missed the recent series against the Angels due to a hamstring issue but may be available for this series.
The Braves have activated right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (7-4, 2.06 ERA) to start the opener of the series. He missed three weeks due to right forearm inflammation. Atlanta will proceed cautiously with Lopez, a converted reliever who has pitched 104 2/3 innings this season, his highest total since 2019 when he was a starter for the Chicago White Sox. Lopez holds a 2-0 record and a 2.57 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) against Philadelphia, including a six-inning scoreless performance against them on July 7.
The Phillies will respond with right-hander Zack Wheeler (12-5, 2.72 ERA), who has had a strong track record against Atlanta. Since joining the Phillies in 2020, Wheeler has faced the Braves 14 times, with a 6-2 record and a 2.16 ERA. He pitched six scoreless innings against the Braves on March 29 in the season opener but did not get a decision.
Wheeler has allowed only four runs (three earned) over his last three starts, most recently defeating the Washington Nationals by giving up two runs (one earned) in six innings. The Phillies won that game 13-3, with Weston Wilson hitting for the cycle.
“The offense is clicking,” Wheeler said. “It’s making our jobs easier.”
The Phillies currently lead the Braves by seven games in the National League East, while Atlanta is fighting to maintain the final wild-card spot, holding a two-game lead over the New York Mets.
“We’ve been playing well on both sides of the game,” said Phillies pitcher Taijuan Walker. “We’re back to our early-season form. We just need to keep it going, winning series.”
