Game Preview
The Kansas City Royals, after briefly climbing to the top of the American League Central, have faced a challenging period with a five-game losing streak. They aim to reverse their fortunes as they start a three-game series at home against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday.
The Royals (75-63) were swept in a four-game series by the Houston Astros, culminating in a 7-2 defeat on Sunday, leaving them tied with the Minnesota Twins and trailing the first-place Guardians (78-59) by 3.5 games.
"It’s been a tough series," Royals manager Matt Quatraro reflected. "We didn’t win any games, and obviously, that’s disappointing because our goal is to win every day."
Kansas City, which took three out of four games against Cleveland last week, recently bolstered its roster with experienced players like Tommy Pham, Robbie Grossman, and Yuli Gurriel. Pham expressed his eagerness to contribute, stating, "I’m here to add some stability and help push this team into the playoffs."
Over the weekend, Cleveland clinched their series against Pittsburgh with a 6-1 win on Sunday, highlighted by Jose Ramirez’s 34th home run of the season. "They have a solid team, with a great bullpen and athleticism, and Ramirez is one of baseball’s most underrated stars," noted Pirates manager Derek Shelton.
The Guardians also saw an impactful performance from rookie Kyle Manzardo, who hit his first two major league homers on Sunday after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus.
The series opener on Monday will see Cleveland’s Gavin Williams (2-7, 4.99 ERA) and Kansas City’s Michael Wacha (11-6, 3.50) on the mound. Williams aims to improve after a tough August, where he had a 6.56 ERA across five starts, including a recent loss to Kansas City.
Wacha is nearing his 100th career win and will face the Guardians again after a no-decision last Wednesday where he surrendered five runs over six innings.
Jose Ramirez has managed four hits in 14 at-bats against Wacha, who holds a 2-0 record and a 2.48 ERA in five starts against Cleveland.
The series continues as both teams push towards postseason aspirations, with the Royals looking to rebound from their recent setbacks.
