Game Preview
A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces are picking up momentum as they prepare to face a struggling Chicago Sky team.
The reigning WNBA champion Aces (20-12) will host the Sky (11-21) Tuesday evening.
Wilson, in standout form, delivered over 40 points in two recent games, including 41 during a win in Phoenix on Sunday. This performance followed a season-high 42-point game against Dallas, helping the Aces secure back-to-back wins for the first time post-Olympics.
However, Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon has expressed particular satisfaction with the team’s defensive improvements. Following an 83-72 victory against Atlanta, Hammon highlighted the consistent defensive efforts that have helped propel the Aces into fourth in the standings, just ahead of the Seattle Storm.
"We’ve really honed in on defense," Hammon noted. "It’s about maintaining that level of play defensively, because that’s what you can rely on game after game. The team has embraced that challenge, focusing on each possession defensively to give us a chance to win."
While the Aces have already secured their playoff position, they are now aiming to enhance their seeding. Meanwhile, the Sky, on a six-game losing streak, are fighting for the last playoff spot. They are tied with Atlanta but hold the tiebreaker with a 2-1 season series lead.
Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon emphasized the team’s resilience and playoff ambitions despite recent setbacks. "We’re still in the playoff hunt," Weatherspoon stated. "We need to keep believing and performing to stay in contention."
Chicago’s challenge has been compounded by the absence of top scorer Chennedy Carter due to health and safety protocols, with her participation in Tuesday’s game still uncertain. In her absence, rookies Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese have stepped up, with Cardoso scoring a career-high 22 points recently and Reese setting a new WNBA single-season record for rebounds.
