Game Preview

The Seattle Mariners will aim for a series victory against the Texas Rangers on Saturday night in Arlington, Texas, while keeping their sights set on the final American League wild-card spot.

The Mariners improved their record to 9-2 against the Rangers this season with an 8-2 win in Friday’s opener, where Julio Rodriguez shined with a 3-for-5 performance, including two home runs and five RBIs. George Kirby allowed just two runs on five hits over six innings, bringing his career record against Texas (73-81) to 7-0.

Currently, Seattle (79-75) trails the Minnesota Twins by two games for the final wild-card position, following the Twins’ crucial 4-2 victory over Boston in 12 innings on Friday. The Detroit Tigers, who lost to Baltimore, sit just ahead of the Mariners, while the Kansas City Royals, struggling with five consecutive losses, hold the second wild-card spot, only one game ahead of the Twins.

Minnesota has the tiebreaker advantage over the Tigers, Mariners, and Royals in case of a tie.

In a critical matchup, Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock (3-4, 4.83 ERA) will face future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer (2-4, 3.95) on Saturday.

Hancock’s only prior start against the Rangers was on September 13, where he allowed three runs on six hits in five innings during a 5-4 Seattle victory, but did not earn a decision.

Scherzer boasts a 4-2 record with a 2.97 ERA in nine career starts against the Mariners. In his last outing against them, he gave up two runs on five hits and two walks over four innings, as Seattle edged the Rangers 5-4 on a walk-off single by Randy Arozarena.

Rodriguez has been particularly effective against Texas, hitting six of his 18 home runs this season against them. He hit a pivotal three-run homer in the fifth inning on Friday, giving the Mariners a 4-2 lead, and followed up with a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 6-2. This marked his fourth career multi-homer game and matched his personal best with five RBIs.

"My approach is to stay within myself and not overdo it," Rodriguez explained. "I just focus on making solid contact with the ball."

Despite needing to close a two-game gap in the standings with only eight days left in the season, Rodriguez is optimistic about the Mariners’ chances.

"I believe we’re in a great position right now with our pitching and hitting," he stated.

The Mariners still have two more games against the Rangers and three in Houston before returning home to finish the season against the Oakland Athletics. The Astros, currently leading the AL West, have a five-game advantage over Seattle.

"You need to win the games you can, and tonight we did what was necessary," Seattle manager Dan Wilson remarked after Friday’s win. "We’ll celebrate briefly and then refocus for tomorrow. This win was a great start to our road trip, and we have important games ahead."

Meanwhile, the Rangers have now dropped two straight and hold a 3-7 record in their last 10 games. However, starter Jacob deGrom, making his first home start since April 28, 2023, after Tommy John surgery, showed promise.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner allowed one run— a leadoff homer to Josh Rojas in the third inning— over three innings, striking out five and hitting a top speed of 99.4 mph.

"He was impressive," said Rangers manager Bruce Bochy. "His stuff was excellent, and he’s only going to get stronger and better with time."

DeGrom expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, "Overall, my arm felt good, which is the most important thing. I was able to use all my pitches effectively, which is a big plus."
