Game Preview
In the next three days, the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves are set to shape the National League’s wild-card playoff picture.
With just six games remaining, the Mets (87-69) currently lead the Arizona Diamondbacks (87-70) by half a game for the second wild-card spot. New York also holds a two-game advantage over their NL East rivals, the Braves (85-71), who are aiming for their seventh consecutive playoff appearance. The series opener takes place in Atlanta on Tuesday.
"These games are crucial for us," said Braves manager Brian Snitker. "We’ve got six left, and they’re all important. We’ll focus on going 1-0 on Tuesday."
The season series between the two teams is even at 5-5, with a four-game split in New York back in July. The Mets can secure a playoff spot by winning two of the three games in this series.
"It’s going to be an exciting atmosphere," remarked Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who hit the game-winning home run against Philadelphia on Sunday. "We’ve been playing playoff-caliber baseball for a week, so we’ll bring that same energy and give it everything we’ve got."
The opener features New York right-hander Luis Severino (11-6, 3.79 ERA) facing Atlanta rookie righty Spencer Schwellenbach (7-7, 3.61).
Severino will make his 31st start of the season and has been one of the most reliable pitchers on the staff, failing to pitch at least five innings only twice all year. He has won four consecutive decisions, including a victory over Philadelphia last Thursday, where he allowed three runs on five hits over six innings while striking out seven.
He has faced the Braves twice this season without a decision, allowing four runs on 11 hits, five walks, and striking out 10 over a total of 10 innings. He holds a 1-1 record with a 3.15 ERA in four career starts against Atlanta.
Schwellenbach has emerged as a promising talent for the Braves, having been called up from Double-A in May without going through Triple-A. He has made 19 major league starts and won his last two outings, including a victory against Cincinnati on Wednesday where he gave up just one run over six innings.
In his sole appearance against the Mets on July 27, Schwellenbach recorded a win by throwing seven scoreless innings, striking out a career-high 11 batters while allowing only two hits.
Initially, it was expected that the Braves would start ace Chris Sale in the series opener, but the decision was made to give him an extra day of rest. Sale and fellow left-hander Max Fried are slated to pitch in the final two games of the series.
Atlanta welcomed back second baseman Ozzie Albies from the injured list, but he is limited to batting right-handed. He managed just 2-for-15 with one home run in three games against Miami over the weekend.
The Mets may also see the return of star shortstop Francisco Lindor on Tuesday, despite him needing to play through back pain that has sidelined him for most of the past few weeks. Lindor participated in limited batting practice on Sunday and is batting .271 with 31 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases over 148 games.
In Lindor’s absence, the Mets have utilized Luisangel Acuña, the younger brother of injured Atlanta star Ronald Acuña Jr. Since being called up from Triple-A Syracuse on September 14, the younger Acuña has impressed, batting .379 with three home runs and six RBIs in nine games.
