Game Preview
After a couple of weather-related delays, the New York Mets are set to continue their playoff pursuit against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in the first game of a three-game series that could impact the National League wild-card race.
The Mets (87-70) are currently tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks (88-71) for the second wild-card spot, trailing the San Diego Padres (91-68) by three games and leading the Atlanta Braves (86-71) by one game. The Mets will also have a makeup doubleheader against Atlanta on Monday following the postponements on Wednesday and Thursday.
"We need to focus on the next series now," said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. "We’re up against a strong team in Milwaukee. It’s essential for us to not only win the series but take care of business out there. That’s our only objective."
The Mets are expected to start left-hander Sean Manaea (12-5, 3.29 ERA) on Friday, while the Brewers will counter with right-hander Frankie Montas (7-11, 4.85). Milwaukee (91-68) clinched the NL Central title last week.
The Brewers finished their final regular-season road trip with a 5-2 win against Pittsburgh on Thursday, where Aaron Civale pitched six scoreless innings.
With the No. 3 seed in the NL playoffs secured, there’s a possibility that the Mets and Brewers could face each other again in the wild-card round.
"These three games will be very strategic," Brewers manager Pat Murphy noted about the upcoming series. "We’ll carefully consider who pitches, how long they pitch, and who will be ready when."
The Mets are likely to have shortstop Francisco Lindor back after he missed time due to lower back pain. Lindor was expected to start Wednesday against the Braves before the rainout.
"Lindor felt good today," Mendoza said. "He was in the lineup because of that. He’ll work out, hit in the cages, and we’ll monitor his progress, giving him an extra day or two if needed." Lindor is batting .271 with 31 home runs and 86 RBIs.
Montas, acquired from Cincinnati in late July, has a 3-3 record with a 4.56 ERA in 10 starts with the Brewers. In his latest outing, he allowed eight runs (seven earned) in 2 2/3 innings, but the Brewers rallied from an 8-0 deficit to win 10-9 against Arizona.
"This shows the character of our team and bullpen," Montas said. "We fight until the end; you have to make 27 outs against us."
This month, Montas is 1-2 with a 5.75 ERA, having surrendered six home runs in 20 1/3 innings. He has a pair of no-decisions with a 5.40 ERA in two career outings against the Mets.
Manaea, in his first season with the Mets, has won four consecutive decisions across eight starts dating back to mid-August, and New York has won all eight games. He has faced the Brewers four times in his career (three starts), holding a 1-1 record with a 4.19 ERA.
