Game Preview

Penn State may have quarterback Drew Allar back in action when the No. 3 Nittany Lions take on No. 4 Ohio State in a crucial Big Ten matchup on Saturday in University Park, Pa.

Allar suffered a knee injury in last week’s 28-13 win over Wisconsin, sidelining him for the second half after he went 14-for-18 with 148 yards and a touchdown. In the previous game, a thrilling 33-30 OT victory against USC, Allar threw for a career-best 391 yards and two touchdowns, boosting Penn State’s record to 7-0 (4-0 in Big Ten).

“It’s still too early to say, but he’s played enough football that we may decide close to game time,” coach James Franklin noted.

If Allar isn’t fully ready, backup QB Beau Pribula is prepared to step up, having gone 11-for-13 for 98 yards and a TD in Allar’s absence last Saturday, along with 28 rushing yards on six carries.

Ohio State (6-1, 3-1) is preparing for both QBs. “We’ll be ready for either quarterback," said Buckeyes coach Ryan Day. "They bring different styles, but both are very effective.”

Ohio State faces its own injury concerns, especially at left tackle. Starter Josh Simmons suffered a season-ending knee injury, and his replacement, Zen Michalski, struggled in last week’s 21-17 win over Nebraska. His status is still uncertain, potentially impacting the Buckeyes’ run game and third-down performance, which suffered last week.

Day and Franklin are both looking to elevate their records against top-10 opponents. For Day, this game is a chance to redeem the Buckeyes after a close loss to Oregon and recent defeats in high-stakes games. "We have to finish strong in the fourth quarter, and this is our chance to prove it," Day emphasized.

Franklin, who is 1-9 against Ohio State, acknowledges the challenge but believes his team is ready. "They’re one of the most talented teams in the country, and they’re strong every year. We’ll need to play a clean game in a great environment."

With both teams gunning for playoff relevance, the stakes are high in this Big Ten showdown.
