Caps Plays Maple Leafs After Ovechkin’s 2-goal Game

If familiarity breeds contempt, there should be animosity aplenty when the Maple Leafs and the Capitals meet at Capital One Arena.

Game Preview

The Toronto Maple Leafs aim to rebound from a tough loss as they visit the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Toronto’s three-game win streak ended with a 3-0 defeat against the Ottawa Senators, where they trailed just 41 seconds into the game and allowed two quick goals early in the second period. Outshot 35-18 through two periods, coach Craig Berube noted, "They wanted it more than us."

During their prior win streak, the Maple Leafs outscored opponents 11-2, powered by a strong power play converting at 53.8 percent. However, Toronto has struggled in even-strength situations, with William Nylander’s last 5-on-5 goal coming on October 31.

Facing under-.500 teams has been challenging for Toronto recently, with losses to the Blues and Blue Jackets in recent weeks. A matchup against the Capitals, however, might be just what the Leafs need to find their form.

Washington, meanwhile, comes in rested after a decisive 8-1 win over the Blues. Despite having played three fewer games, the Capitals’ 20 points are tied with Toronto’s. Captain Alex Ovechkin led Washington’s third-period surge, contributing a power-play goal in a period where the Capitals scored five times. Though Washington’s power play has struggled, converting at just 12.5 percent, Ovechkin’s impact remains strong, with 10 goals in 14 games as he closes in on Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.

Center Dylan Strome highlighted Ovechkin’s influence, saying, “He energizes the whole team. We’re all working toward that record, and we’re winning games."

With both teams looking to assert themselves, this matchup promises plenty of action and betting angles for NHL fans.
