Philadelphia Flyers: Playoff Pressure Mounting
Philadelphia rolls in at 40-27-12 with 92 points, clinging to a playoff spot like someone holding their last chip at the blackjack table. One point ahead of the Islanders, two ahead of Columbus, three ahead of Washington. Basically, one bad night and it is panic mode.
Well… they just had that bad night.
A 6-3 loss to Detroit where they decided penalties were a fun hobby. Six penalties, three power play goals allowed, and for extra comedy, they even gave up a short handed goal. Truly a masterclass in how not to defend.
Coach Rick Tocchet was not thrilled, which is putting it lightly. When your best players get outplayed and the discipline disappears, things get ugly fast.
The good news is this team has bounced back well all season. They are 5-1-0 after losses since the break, so they usually respond like a team that remembers their playoff lives are on the line.
Still, walking into Winnipeg with that fresh disaster in the rearview mirror is not exactly ideal.
Winnipeg Jets: Refusing To Quit
Winnipeg sits at 35-31-12 with 82 points and is still alive in the playoff race. Barely, but alive. Three points back of a wild card spot and playing like a team that refuses to go quietly.
They have won three straight and seven of their last nine, which is impressive considering they looked cooked not that long ago. Now they are suddenly that annoying team nobody wants to play late in the season.
Josh Morrissey summed it up best. No quit. Lots of battling. Probably a few bruises and missing teeth along the way too.
Their latest win was a 3-2 grind against St. Louis, which tells you everything about how they are winning right now. Not flashy, just hard nosed hockey and everyone pitching in.
Scott Arniel is basically asking for full team effort, which is coach speak for “if you are breathing, I need you blocking shots.”
They also beat Philly 5-2 earlier this season, with Mark Schiefele scoring twice, just in case the Flyers needed a reminder of how that went.
LVSB NHL Prediction
Winnipeg is sitting at -133 on the Moneyline, with a tempting +200 on the puck line at -1.5 and a total of 5.5.
This game screams pressure. Flyers are trying to hold onto a playoff spot, Jets are trying to steal one. One team is spiraling off a sloppy loss, the other is playing like every game is Game 7.
Philadelphia has been resilient, sure. But Winnipeg is hotter, more desperate, and playing the kind of gritty hockey that wins ugly games this time of year.
Also, if the Flyers decide to take another six penalties, you can go ahead and wrap this up early.
Take Winnipeg at home. Lean toward the puck line if you are feeling spicy.
Score Prediction: Jets 4, Flyers 2
