The San Diego Padres emerged from the All-Star break facing a daunting schedule of 19 games over 18 days in a stretch that started with a doubleheader against the team they were pursuing for the best record in the American League: the New York Yankees.
Albert Pujols could make history this week when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the San Diego Padres beginning Tuesday for a three-game series that may also be a preview of a first-round playoff series.
