The Yankees limped into Thursday with six straight losses and an offense that looked like it was stuck in quicksand. Over that cold stretch, they managed a brutal .155 batting average and went 30 straight innings without plating a run. But in Thursday’s 7-3 win over the Angels, New York’s offense snapped out of its coma in a big way.
Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt went back-to-back early, Cody Bellinger racked up three hits, and the Yankees finished with 12 hits, their highest output in over a week. Even Aaron Judge, who had been ice cold at 2-for-24, doubled and looked more like his usual MVP self. Despite the slump, Judge still boasts a league-best .366 average.
Now, with the bats awake and a series win in sight, the Yankees look to ride the momentum behind ace Max Fried (9-2, 1.89 ERA), who has been nails all year. He’s allowed two earned runs or fewer in 14 of 15 starts and is in prime position to notch his 10th win, the first pitcher in MLB to hit double digits.
Baltimore Orioles Preview
The Orioles have been all over the map lately. After dropping 14 of 17 earlier this season, they turned things around with a sweep over the Angels and a split in Tampa Bay. In Thursday’s 4-1 win over the Rays, Colton Cowser clubbed his third homer in as many games and Gunnar Henderson extended his hitting streak to 13 games, hitting .396 during the stretch.
Baltimore is 10-for-21 with runners in scoring position over its last three games, so the bats are heating up, just in time for a tough series in the Bronx.
Rookie right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4, 3.38 ERA) will take the mound. He blanked the Yankees over five innings earlier this season but has failed to get through the fifth in back-to-back starts. That inconsistency could spell trouble against a Yankees lineup showing signs of life.
