San Diego Padres: King Needs Redemption
The Padres finally remembered they are supposed to be good at baseball again Friday night, which must have come as a tremendous relief to everyone holding San Diego futures tickets and stress-eating tortilla chips after that four-game losing streak.
Now Michael King gets the ball looking to recover from what can only be described as a suspiciously human outing against the Athletics.
Before that disaster, King had been operating like one of the best pitchers in the National League. The man owns a 2.76 ERA, leads San Diego starters in innings and strikeouts, and had allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his first 11 starts. Then Oakland showed up and suddenly King started handing out walks like free casino drink vouchers in Vegas.
Craig Stammen basically gave the baseball version of “he’ll be fine, bro” after the game, and honestly he’s probably right.
King usually bounces back quickly because his command and strikeout stuff are too good to stay shaky for long. San Diego bettors should also enjoy facing a Nationals lineup that occasionally looks dangerous and occasionally looks like everyone forgot the WiFi password in the dugout.
Jackson Merrill finally snapped his home run drought Friday with a massive two-run blast, which probably saved several fantasy baseball managers from emotional collapse. Fernando Tatis Jr. added three hits because apparently he enjoys personally ruining opposing pitching staffs for entertainment.
And Mason Miller?
The man entered with the bases loaded and casually escaped like somebody leaving Costco with one item.
San Diego’s offense feels dangerous again, which is bad news for Washington.
Washington Nationals: Spoiling Pitches Constantly
The Nationals continue playing baseball like a team stuck somewhere between rebuilding and accidentally becoming annoying.
Honestly, they are not terrible.
Foster Griffin quietly bounced back beautifully last weekend against Atlanta after previously getting torched for 14 earned runs in two starts. Baseball is funny like that. One week you are getting shelled into another dimension, the next week you are throwing six scoreless innings against the Braves and suddenly everybody starts believing again.
Griffin’s off-speed pitches looked sharp against Atlanta, and Washington desperately needs another strong outing because this bullpen currently inspires the confidence level of gas station sushi.
Curtis Mead continues swinging a hot bat lately with four homers over his last six games, while Keibert Ruiz keeps contributing timely offense. The Nationals can absolutely score enough runs to stay competitive here if they capitalize on early opportunities.
The problem?
San Diego’s lineup is significantly deeper and significantly scarier.
Washington pitchers struggled badly finishing hitters Friday night. Padres batters kept spoiling two-strike pitches until the Nationals eventually made mistakes. Against a disciplined offense like San Diego, that turns into a long evening very quickly.
Also, asking Washington’s pitching staff to survive Tatis, Merrill, and Manny Machado for nine innings sounds emotionally exhausting.
LVSB Final Score Prediction
Washington hangs around early because baseball enjoys making gamblers uncomfortable for no reason. Eventually, Michael King settles in, San Diego’s offense starts cooking again, and the Padres pull away late.
The Nationals compete hard but still feel one reliable bullpen arm and about three consistent bats away from becoming truly dangerous.
