Game Preview

The Houston Astros’ 5-3 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates in their series opener on Monday was overshadowed by a significant trade that brought veteran left-hander Yusei Kikuchi from the Toronto Blue Jays.

With five starting pitchers currently on the injured list—including Justin Verlander, Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy, Lance McCullers Jr., and Luis Garcia—the Astros made a hefty trade. They sent rookie right-hander Jake Bloss, rookie outfielder Joey Loperfido, and minor league infielder Will Wagner to Toronto in exchange for Kikuchi (4-9, 4.75 ERA). Kikuchi was slated to start for the Blue Jays on Wednesday, but could potentially debut for the Astros in the series finale against the Pirates. Houston hopes that Kikuchi will perform better with their coaching staff, despite his recent struggles (0-4 with a 7.75 ERA in his last eight starts).

Astros general manager Dana Brown acknowledged the difficulty of giving up young talent but emphasized the importance of stabilizing the rotation to make a deep postseason run.

Hunter Brown (9-6, 4.00 ERA) is set to start for the Astros on Tuesday. He has been consistent, recording his 12th quality start last Wednesday with one run allowed over six innings in a win against the Oakland Athletics. Brown is 8-2 with a 2.10 ERA over his last 12 starts.

This game will be Brown’s first career start against the Pirates. He holds a 4-6 record with a 4.45 ERA in 15 career appearances against National League teams.

The Pirates will counter with left-hander Bailey Falter (4-7, 4.08 ERA), who was reinstated from the injured list on Monday after a stint due to left triceps tendonitis. Falter struggled before his injury, including a loss to the New York Mets on July 6. He is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two career starts against the Astros, including a previous game where he allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings.
