Game Preview
The Boston Red Sox will seek to snap a four-game losing streak on Monday as they kick off a three-game series against the Texas Rangers.
Boston struggled over the weekend, getting swept by the Houston Astros and managing only a .188 team batting average during the series, being outscored 23-10. The Red Sox also allowed nine home runs, including three in Sunday’s 10-2 defeat.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but emphasized the need to move forward. "We lost three games. We played well the first two. [Sunday]… they put it on us. We got to turn the page and get ready for [Monday]," he said.
Compounding their troubles, starting pitcher James Paxton exited Sunday’s game with a right calf strain after just five pitches, and he is set to undergo an MRI on Monday. The Red Sox had to use bullpen games on Saturday and Sunday due to Cooper Criswell’s COVID-related injury and Nick Pivetta’s arm fatigue.
Despite the losses, Cora praised his team’s resilience: "The boys, they battled today. Guys pitching in different roles and extended them. We had to somehow, someway get 27 outs."
The Rangers, meanwhile, are reeling from a 8-7 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday, scoring all their runs in the final four innings. Manager Bruce Bochy noted the bullpen’s struggles but was encouraged by the offense’s late surge.
Texas has lost 11 of its last 15 games, but Bochy remains optimistic: "You keep fighting until you’re not in it, and we don’t feel like that right now. It’s good to see some life going with these guys."
On the mound Monday, Texas right-hander Tyler Mahle (0-1, 1.80 ERA) will make his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery. He’ll face Boston’s Brayan Bello (10-5, 5.16 ERA), who is rejoining the team after a brief paternity leave. Bello has a 2-1 record with a 5.63 ERA in three career starts against the Rangers.
Earlier this month, the Red Sox won two of three games against the Rangers in Arlington.
