Las Vegas Looking For Fast Response
The defending champions could not have asked for a worse opening night. Las Vegas Aces were completely overwhelmed by Phoenix in a 99-66 blowout that exposed major defensive concerns and questionable conditioning.
Coach Becky Hammon did not sugarcoat the performance afterward, openly criticizing the team’s effort, execution, and defensive focus. That type of public frustration usually creates urgency, especially for a veteran roster expected to contend for another title.
A’ja Wilson still delivered 19 points despite the ugly loss, while Jackie Young added 12. The problem was everything around them collapsed. Las Vegas struggled defending the perimeter and allowed Phoenix to shoot 11-for-24 from beyond the arc.
That is especially concerning considering the Aces were one of the league’s strongest three-point defensive teams last season. Expect a much sharper effort defensively in this matchup because championship teams rarely stay flat for long after an embarrassing opener.
The betting angle here centers around urgency. Las Vegas knows another poor showing would immediately create panic around a team expected to dominate the Western Conference.
Sparks Enter With New Energy
Los Angeles Sparks open their season with renewed optimism after reshaping key parts of the roster during the offseason.
The biggest addition is veteran forward Nneka Ogwumike, who averaged 18.3 points and seven rebounds last season. Her arrival gives Los Angeles another proven scorer and leader alongside Dearica Hamby, who posted 18.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in 2025.
Former Aces guard Kelsey Plum also believes this roster is finally starting to match the vision she had when joining Los Angeles. That added chemistry and confidence could make the Sparks a dangerous early-season team.
Another major x-factor is Cameron Brink. Injuries slowed her development during her first two seasons, but her defensive presence remains extremely valuable. If Brink stays healthy, Los Angeles should improve defensively after finishing near the bottom of the league last year.
Still, there are fair questions about whether this group can immediately slow down elite offenses. The Sparks allowed 88.2 points per game last season and consistently struggled defending perimeter shooting.
WNBA Prediction & Betting Picks
This line feels short considering the circumstances. Las Vegas is coming off a humiliating loss, and veteran championship teams usually respond aggressively after getting embarrassed nationally.
The Sparks should be improved offensively with Ogwumike and Plum helping lead the attack, but defensive concerns still linger. The Aces also have the clear edge in playoff-level experience and star power.
Expect a much cleaner and more focused performance from Las Vegas on both ends of the floor.
