Indiana Fever: Scoring Comes Easy
The Fever opened the season by treating defense like it was an optional gym membership.
Indiana Fever scored 104 points Saturday and somehow still lost because Dallas shot 59.1% from the floor and apparently wandered into the paint whenever it wanted like somebody entering a grocery store five minutes before closing.
Still, Indiana’s offense looked dangerous.
Kelsey Mitchell dropped 30 points on 11-for-22 shooting and looked like she personally declared war on transition defense. Aliyah Boston added 23 points while Caitlin Clark finished with 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds despite shooting 7-for-18.
That trio combined for 73 points, which normally wins basketball games unless your defense starts moving like airport security after midnight.
Coach Stephanie White made it very clear afterward that the Fever plan to focus heavily on transition defense entering Los Angeles. Translation: somebody on Indiana finally discovered the word “urgency.”
The good news for Fever fans is the offense already looks explosive. The bad news is they now have to survive a road environment where every defensive mistake gets replayed endlessly on social media by angry gamblers.
Los Angeles Sparks: Defense Needs Answers
The Sparks also opened the year by getting punched directly in the basketball soul.
Los Angeles Sparks lost 105-78 to Las Vegas in a game where the second half basically turned into a televised avalanche. Los Angeles briefly fought back before the Aces immediately reminded everyone why defending champions usually ruin people’s evenings professionally.
Kelsey Plum was excellent with 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting, continuing her mission of carrying offenses while looking mildly annoyed at all times.
Veteran star Nneka Ogwumike added 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Dearica Hamby chipped in 12 points.
Unfortunately, the rest of the team looked like they had just met in the parking lot 15 minutes before tipoff.
Coach Lynne Roberts admitted chemistry remains a work in progress, which is coach language for “everybody stop panicking immediately.” One player under the spotlight is Cameron Brink, who played only eight minutes while collecting more fouls and turnovers than points.
That’s generally considered less than ideal.
Still, the Sparks should be more competitive Wednesday because Indiana’s defense currently leaks points faster than a broken casino slot machine.
LVSB Final Score Prediction
Both teams desperately want their first win, but Indiana’s offensive firepower feels slightly more trustworthy entering this matchup.
The Fever already proved they can score efficiently, while Los Angeles still appears stuck somewhere between “figuring things out” and “accidental chaos.” If Clark, Mitchell, and Boston continue pushing the tempo, Indiana should eventually outscore the Sparks in another fast-paced game.
Also, expecting defense here feels optimistic at best.
