NY Yankees vs Toronto MLB Preview & Pick
Moneyline: NY Yankees -152
Runline: NY Yankees -1.5 (+115)
Total: 8.0
New York Yankees
The Yankees enter Toronto as -152 favorites, but their offense continues to make every game feel harder than it needs to be. Since Aaron Judge fractured a rib on June 1, New York has leaned heavily on its pitching staff. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees rank 28th in runs and last with a .207 batting average.
Fortunately, Gerrit Cole gives New York a major advantage on the mound. Cole is 6-5 with a 3.35 ERA and has been excellent recently, posting a 1.45 ERA while winning his last three starts. He also owns Toronto historically, going 9-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 18 career starts against the Blue Jays.
New York’s 2.86 ERA since the break ranks second in baseball, but asking the pitching staff to carry a silent offense every night eventually catches up.
Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto was shut out 7-0 by Boston on Thursday, but the bigger picture is encouraging. The Blue Jays still took three of four from the Red Sox and enter this series only two games behind the final AL wild-card spot.
Their offense has also struggled since the break, ranking 27th in runs with a .234 batting average. Shane Bieber gets the start at 3-2 with a 5.48 ERA. His career numbers against New York are more respectable at 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA across five starts.
Toronto has urgency, home-field advantage and an attractive +128 price. After watching the Yankees score zero runs Thursday, laying -152 with New York requires considerable faith in an offense that has provided very little reason to deserve it.
Betting Prediction
Cole clearly gives New York the pitching edge, but Toronto offers the better betting value. The Yankees’ offensive problems make them difficult to trust as sizable road favorites.
Toronto just won a series against Boston, remains firmly in the wild-card race and should have enough opportunities at home to steal a tight opener.
