Houston Finally Found the Gas Pedal
Houston enters Wednesday at .500 after opening the series with a 9-7 win over New York, improving to 6-9 over its last 15. The Astros also jumped back a half-game ahead of Texas in the AL West, so apparently panic is now an acceptable motivational strategy.
Yordan Alvarez remains the terrifying part of this lineup. He owns an MLB-best .323 average, is hitting .333 over his last 13 games and an absurd .581 (18-for-31) across his last seven against the Yankees. He also delivered the go-ahead RBI triple Tuesday. Yainer Diaz is batting .344 over his last 22 games and launched two solo homers in the opener.
Yankees Bullpen Suddenly Became Generous
New York is still playing solid baseball at 6-2 over its last eight and 10-6 across 16, but Tuesday’s bullpen performance looked like somebody accidentally switched the difficulty setting.
The Yankees bullpen owns a 3.06 ERA, yet surrendered six runs Tuesday. Brent Headrick took the loss and has now been scored upon in 12 of 68 appearances. His heavy workload is officially something Aaron Boone is monitoring.
Elmer Rodriguez is expected to start for New York. He is 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in the majors but has been excellent at Triple-A, going 8-3 with a 2.59 ERA over 19 starts.
Peter Lambert: Please Forget Thursday
Houston counters with Peter Lambert, who is 8-7 with a 3.68 ERA but 0-2 with a 4.95 ERA over his last seven starts. His latest outing was particularly decorative: nine earned runs in 3⅔ innings against the Angels.
Not ideal. Possibly even bad.
Still, Houston’s offense is seeing the ball extremely well, and Alvarez apparently treats Yankee pitching like batting practice.
