Seattle Mariners Preview
The Mariners begin a brutal 10-game road swing with a trip to Wrigley Field after dropping two of three to the Red Sox. Friday’s matinee puts right-hander George Kirby (1-3, 5.96 ERA) on the hill for his first-ever start against the Cubs.
Kirby has been trending upward. After two shaky May outings, he’s allowed just two earned runs in each of his last three starts. Still, opposing batters like Kyle Tucker and Justin Turner have had mixed success against him in limited appearances. Cal Raleigh continues to be a bright spot offensively, his 27 homers before the break puts him within reach of Johnny Bench’s legendary pace. Add to that a team-record 8 stolen bases for a catcher, and Raleigh is doing it all.
However, Seattle’s bullpen has been leaky, and scoring runs consistently has been an issue.
Chicago Cubs Preview
The Cubs lost a high-scoring 8-7 affair to the Brewers Thursday but remain atop the NL Central. Lefty Matthew Boyd (6-3, 2.79 ERA) gets the nod Friday, and he’s been steady, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.80 ERA in his last six starts. Boyd’s last outing against Seattle wasn’t pretty (2023 with Detroit), but he’s clearly found a rhythm since.
Chicago’s lineup has been getting pop lately. Pete Crow-Armstrong continues to make history, becoming the first Cub to notch 20 homers and 20 steals before the All-Star break. Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson also went yard in Thursday’s loss, adding to a power surge the team will look to carry into this home series.
Betting Outlook & Prediction
The Cubs are in better form offensively and have the edge in starting pitching with Boyd. Seattle’s inconsistency on the road and long travel schedule make this a tough spot.
