Game Preview

The New York Mets will look to continue their storybook season as they face the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series on Saturday afternoon. The Mets secured their spot in the NLDS after a thrilling 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of the wild-card series, highlighted by Pete Alonso’s three-run homer in the ninth inning.

"You imagine these moments as a kid, being down by two runs in the playoffs," Alonso said. "Words can’t capture the feeling."

Despite struggling with just two hits in the first eight innings and trailing 2-0, the Mets rallied in the ninth. Francisco Lindor earned a leadoff walk from Brewers closer Devin Williams, followed by Brandon Nimmo’s single, setting the stage for Alonso’s crucial homer.

Starling Marte later added a run with a single that brought in Jesse Winker, sealing the win. This latest act of heroism follows the Mets’ dramatic 8-7 victory over Atlanta earlier in the week, where Lindor also played a pivotal role with a two-run shot in the ninth inning.

After a rough start to the season with a 24-35 record on June 2, the Mets surged, finishing 89-73 and claiming a playoff spot by winning 65 of their last 103 games. This matchup marks the first postseason meeting between the two teams.

On the mound for the Phillies will be ace Zack Wheeler, a former Met who enjoyed a stellar regular season, going 16-7 with a 2.57 ERA and 224 strikeouts. Wheeler expressed the usual nerves that come with postseason play but is confident in his ability to perform.

The Mets will counter with right-hander Kodai Senga, who, despite limited action this season due to injuries, ended with a strong 12-7 record and a 2.98 ERA. Senga pitched only once before in July, allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings against Atlanta.

The Phillies, with 95 wins this season, have been one of the strongest teams in baseball, boasting a fourth-best run differential. However, while the Mets have played five games in quick succession, the Phillies have had downtime, which historically can be a disadvantage in the postseason.

In their previous encounters this year, the Phillies won the season series 7-6 against the Mets, including a two-game split in London, though New York won three of the last four matchups. The stakes are high as both teams vie for a spot in the next round.
